This summer, during the summer shutdown, we are pleased to invite the SISSI club to host an exhibition by Amalia Laurent, which will be visible from the gallery windows.
SISSI club is a gallery based in Marseille. Created in April 2019, it is directed by two curators, Elise Poitevin and Anne Vimeux, with the graphic assistance of Marie-Mam Sai Bellier. It includes a bookstore designed by Romain Magail.
Initially conceived as a project space to promote emerging practices, the program is being built up with a particular focus on the local scene and invitations to international artists and curators.
At the same time, in 2022, the space will adopt the gallery model to pursue its relationship with a constellation of represented artists. The approach defended by the artists and curators focuses on artistic practices whose approach lies between research and fiction, and explores space and bodies politically through decolonial, queer, inclusive and ecological positions.
AMALIA LAURENT
Born in 1992 in Nîmes, Amalia Laurent (lives and works between Nîmes and Paris) is a Franco-Indonesian artist. She graduated from HEAR — Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg in 2015, and from the Royal College of Art in London in 2018. In 2023, she obtained a doctorate at EHESS – School of Advanced Studies in Social Sciences.
Member of the Genthasari group, a gamelan music ensemble, and trained in the Batik technique by MasTatang, Amalia Laurent creates environments made of installations, sculptures and performances based on her research on dyeing, architecture, processions and the collective diffusion of sound during them. She places Batik at the center of her practice, that is to say the decomposition of dye and wax on fabrics, which forms the primary structure of her installations. Thanks to this technique, the artist allows an unpredictable circulation of materials and a projection of a territory, in accordance with the philosophy of this ancestral art. Conceived in situ and through the use of photography as memory, his works are personifications of natural or architectural landscapes in which they are intended to be inserted, in a form of mise en abyss.
Recent individual or group exhibitions include: Arco fair (Madrid), LRRH (Düsseldorf), Shoreditch Art Club (London), Galerie des Bains (London), Sainte-Chapelle de Paris (Paris), CNEAI (Paris), Dohyang Lee (Paris), Poush Manifesto (Paris), BBB Center d’art (Toulouse), CACN (Nîmes), CRAC Occitanie (Sète), SISSI club (Marseille). Laurent has benefited from a residency at the CNEAI (Paris), Poush Manifesto (Paris).
Amalia Larent will be a resident at the Villa Médicis (Rome) in 2024-2025.
